Is Viddy the Instagram For Video?May 9, 2012
Being a self confessed Instagram addict, there’s a rare day that goes by that I don’t take photos. Admittedly most of them are of my cat (Graham) but as a professional videographer, I’ve really been waiting for the day when a decent video-sharing app would at last become available. Cue Viddy.
Launched over a year ago and with a current database of 26 million users, Viddy has been valued at a staggering $200 million. Not surprising really after Mark Zuckerberg gave it his stamp of approval by posting a web video of his dog, Beast. With similar celebrity backers such as Twitter’s Biz Stone, Will Smith, Shakira, Jay-Z and Roc Nation, it would seem Viddy’s popularity is on the way up.
Although Viddy does appear to be generating an incredible amount of users and one can’t ignore the benefits that come from the backing of A-list celebrities. However, from my experience when talking to several friends and colleagues, is seems that Viddy can also be viewed as nothing more than Spam.
Viddy requires a “Facebook App Request” log in, meaning the app can freely post what you’ve watched on your timeline. I can’t help but think that this is the main cause of their rapidly growing numbers. Several reviews (Apple’s App Store) have said that Viddy had posted videos onto their Facebook timeline page without them evening watching them.
If Instagram had adopted the same logic, people would be inundated with an incredible amount of photos that people have viewed? With this in mind, I have to agree with my friends and colleagues and feel that Viddy has scored a huge own goal. While Instagram didn’t change photography, it did give users simple filters, a simple format and unlimited photo uploads. Viddy unfortunately is seriously limited for users, with video being capped at a mere 15 seconds.
Although, that said, apps with limitations have still succeeded. Take Twitter’s 140 character limit for example, this has forced users to become more creative with their tweets with no detriment to it’s popularity.
I do love the idea of Viddy and understand it’s still in its infancy, but the 15-second limit is the real deal breaker for me. Maybe with more of an investment, the upload length will increase?
So, all this leaves the question is Viddy the “Instagram For Video?”…In short I don’t think so – not yet anyway. Certainly not until they address the key issues of stability, interface and restrictions.
