New Apple iPad – And What it Means for Web VideoMarch 8, 2012
Apple has unveiled its new iPad (working title: ‘new iPad’), which has delivered on the media giant’s commitment to quality video and photo capture.
The main reason behind this is the screen resolution: a striking 2,048 by 1,536 pixels. Basically, that’s a lot. In fact, it’s more than your standard HD TV set. To support this, the new iPad will be powered by an A5X chip, which will enable it to process the new features at twice the speed of its predecessor – the ingeniously named iPad 2.
In addition, the new iPad is capable of 1080p video recording and playback, with a 5 megapixel camera included too. So you can expect more people to film on their new device – blurring the gap between professional and ‘citizen’ video work.
So what does this mean for professional web video companies?
Well, nothing really. Whilst the new iPad is capable of filming quality web video, and this is a real breakthrough for a mobile device of course. But when compared to industry standard camera equipment, it really does still pale into insignificance.
And then there’s editing, too. The iPad will come fully loaded with iMovie, which for public users is more than suitable. But the advanced features available in Final Cut Pro again stand it head and shoulders above.
So as we already knew, the iPad is not going to have any real impact on professional video production. But its release will certainly see the need for video producers to up their game in terms of the quality they are producing, to really make the most of the device’s enhanced video playback capabilities.
